Hasaka celebrates Christmas amid safety concerns

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The Christian-domiated areas in northeastern Hasaka province have been busy in Christmas and the new year celebrations amid concern over fireworks and crackers among children and youths.

The installation of lights and decorations began in the Assyrian neighborhoods of Tal Tamer and the Syriac neighborhoods of al-Hasaka and al-Qamishli where a celebration for children had been organised by the Christian Civil Society while trees, streets and public places in the city were lit up.

The Fourth Scout Regiment in al-Qamishli organized the Christmas Carnival in Amouda during the regiment’s visit to the Mar Elias Church for Christmas.

Christmas decorations, Christmas trees, Santa Claus toys, sweets, food, fruit and nuts are on display in all the shops on the main streets of these cities as well as special clothing brought out for Christmas.

However fireworks which distinguish New Year's Day celebrations are the only downside of these celebrations. The fireworks represent a major inconvenience for many people who due to the war are terrified of the sound of explosions or gunfire.

The fireworks business turns a high profit before New Year's Day, as these are the most common form of celebration and the shops sell without any deterrents or being held accountable by the existing authorities, so fireworks are sold to children and adolescents in large quantities.

The atmosphere in the province’s cities has calmed down in the recent period, and with Christmas approaching the sound of different types of fireworks ring out in the alleys of these cities as children and youths set the fireworks off.
