(Zaman Al Wasl)- The fierce war in Syria did not leave anyone without a grave effect on their spirit. Death may be the least of those effects, as some Syrians say, because those who died have ended their torment from the moment of the soul's descent into their Creator. Those who have not died, the effect of war is still craving their with loss and displacement.
The majority of Syrians have become exposed to psychological disorders. Syrians living inside Syria live in terror and fear of arrest or being killed with a random shell as well as fear for their male sons of conscription or of their daughters being harassed or raped. Life in Syria became with no single restraint after the fall of the moral system and the spread of mafia militias that control all the capabilities and joints of the country.
As for those who are abroad, they experience other experiences, such as the fear of those who left behind at home, or in the management of their new lives in the Diaspora, or the panic of the new society's traditions, most of them fear the loss of their children morally and physically.
-No real figure-
There are no accurate studies or real figures on the number of psychologically affected by the war. The facts told by those coming from Damascus and other provinces are no more than strange observations of people on their faces in public parks and streets, each with a story to tell. In addition to psychological fears experienced by families which did not exist before. These fears led to conflict inside the families. The Syrian can no longer be safe anywhere neither at home nor anywhere else.
Pro-regime Tishreen Newspaper talked about figures close to two million psychological patients in Syria after the seven years of war in a meeting with the Director of Mental Health in the regime Ministry of Health. This number cannot be real as it is more approaching speculation, but the number could be much larger than the government official said.
"Three types of severe, moderate, and severe mental disorders are severe disturbances in 1-2% of the general population," the government director said.
He pointed out that if the population of Syria is 20 million, we will have on the basis of the previous 40000 psychiatric patients and in the case of crises, as in the case of the Syrian crisis doubles the proportion to 2 -4%, that we have in the crisis about 80000 psychiatric patients in severe condition. The average disturbances, in normal cases usually between 8-10% and in the case of crises, it doubled to between 15-20%, and thus we have during the crisis up to two million patients with moderate disorders.
The public health official confirmed that the centers deployed dealt with nearly 150000 cases in 2017, despite the weakness of experience and the number of hospitals that have either been destroyed or that they do not have the means to cure, and add to the scarcity of mental health facilities in Syria. In Damascus Ibn Sina Hospital is the only hospital specialized in mental health.
As to how the Syrians commented on this news, the article was republished on Damascus Now, and the comments ranged from cynicism and sadness to what had happened to them.
Some of the reasons behind the spread of mental illness are pressure and stress in all aspects of life. A Syrian commented, “tt is normal since there is stress in all respects whether economic situation and low salaries and the widespread theives during the day and night.”
Another commented that injustice is the one made people mad. Another saw that the story cannot be attributed to one reason only, we have psychological, social, emotional and financial crisis. Thank God we are still alive and breathing.
Corruption is one of the reasons why people reached this limit of mental fatigue.
One of them scoffed at what the article said was that there were no doctors because they were taken to conscription or became mad.
The socialist totalitarian regimes are the cause of psychological trauma and insanity. This is what one of the observers commented because they are vampires, "all the socialist peoples who lived for many years under socialism are psychological patients and vampires.”
The comments dealt with some of the reasons for the series of violations that are taking place against the Syrians from death, displacement and rape, "Oh, we have suffered psychological harm, destruction of homes, loss of loved ones, orphaning of children, mothers and wives and rape of women."
The years of harsh war have cast a shadow over every Syrian home, and the Syrians are still paying the price of continued war.
