Rukban camp: winter intensifies suffering of 11,000 families

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian refugees live very hard humanitarian conditions in al-Rukban Camp at Jordanian border due to neglect and lack of support from international relief organizations especially in winter.

Spokesman of al-Badiya Now Page Abdul Kareem Abdullah told Zaman al-Wasl, "the suffering of the Syrian refugees has increased with the recent trough which hit the region due to the large shortage of fuel and the high prices compared to the deteriorating economic situation for families in the camp."

He added that the residents of the camp receive their needs of heating materials either through smuggling, or the materials are obtained through regime checkpoints surrounding the area, which impose heavy protection money on vehicles heading to al-Rukban Camp. This reflects negatively on the situation of refugees inside the camp.

He pointed out that the recent rainstorm in the camp has caused severe damage to the tents, while the rain caused extensive flooding and water flowed through the tents, which flooded with water. The storm also raised the price of fuel. Fuel liter increased to 500 Syrian pounds.

Regarding medical situation, Abdul Kareem clarified that the medical points built in the camp are mostly managed by nurses because of the lack of doctors, and lack of medical materials and medicines, pointing at the same time to the lack of milk and food for children.

On the other hand, Abdul-Kareem indicated that the last convoy of international aid to enter the camp was at the beginning of January. The Jordanian authorities allowed aid to enter the camp only once.

Despite the long interruption of aid from the camp, the last convoy was disappointing for the refugees. According to Abdul Kareem, the aid convoy included food supplies, detergents, blankets, blankets, clothes and some children's belongings that can barely cover the needs of the camp residents which shelters around 11200 families.
