(Zaman Al Wasl)- The Israeli airstrikes on Iranian sites in Syria following the crash of its F-16 fighter jet have drawn to surface the mounting influence of the key regional power.
Figures revealed the Iranian opposition and leaked documents issued by the regime army show that at least 150,000 fighters are operating under the Iranian command in Syria.
More than 20,000 Afghani and Pakistani militants and 95,000 Syrians, mostly from the Alawites sect, in addition to the Iran's proxy Hezbollah militia and Iraqi paramilitary groups.
Satellite images and military sources revealed that a new capm set up by Hezbollah in the Syrian desert near the T4 military from where the Iranian drone took off to cross the Israeli-Occupied Golan Heights before being downed by Israel and launch 12 airstrikes in retaliation.
Sources said Hezbollah had used tents belonging to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
The tens of Syrian displaced as their food have easily become in the hands of Assad militias, activists say.
On Saturday, Israel targeted what it said were Iranian positions after one of its warplanes was hit by regime air defences and crashed.
It was the most serious confrontation between Iran and Israel since Syria’s war began in 2011 and came amid growing alarm over Syrian government offensives against rebel-held Eastern Ghouta and Idlib.
Israel’s Ambassador Danny Danon called on the Security Council “to condemn this dangerous act and to put an immediate end to Iranian provocations.”
Diplomats, however, said there were no immediate plans to convene a council meeting despite the sharp rise in tensions.
The council is due to discuss the crisis in Syria on Wednesday.
