Turkey shells pro-regime forces in Afrin: Syria state media

Syrian state media reported on Tuesday that Turkish forces had shelled pro-Syrian government fighters after they entered Afrin region to help ward off a Turkish attack.

Turkish state media then reported that the military had fired "warning shots" at the Syria pro-regime forces in the city, forcing them to withdraw.

The fighters wore camouflage fatigues and waved weapons and Syrian flags from their vehicles as they crossed through a checkpoint that bore the insignia of a Kurdish security force.

Syria's Kurdish YPG militia said the Syrian government had sent fighters to Syria's northwestern Afrin region to help them defend against a Turkish offensive.

"The Syrian government has responded to the call of the duty and sent military units on this day ... to deploy along the border and take part in defending the unity of Syria's territory and borders," YPG spokesman Nouri Mahmoud said in a statement.

The footage came after a statement from the military media unit run by the government's ally Hezbollah Popular said Popular Forces fighters that support the Syrian government have started to enter the Kurdish-held Afrin region in northwest Syria coming from Aleppo.

The militias are entering Afrin through the al-Ziyara crossing point north of Nubul, the Hezbollah media unit said.
