'Muslim Brotherhood' has no intention to quit National Coalition: Comptroller General

Syria’s Muslim Brotherhood says it has no intention to withdraw from the National Coalition over the opposition participation in Geneva II.

Mr. Mohammad Riad al-Shaqfeh, the Comptroller General of Islamic movement, said in closed meeting held recently In Istanbul with some Mb members that withdrawal will be an erratic behavior as well as the group has formed most NC’s internal regulations, in hint to its influential role, according to Zaman Alwasl sources.

"Muslim Brotherhood of Syria does not see going to Geneva peace conference a deviation, unless the participation is useless,” Shaqfeh said, stressing that the group's refusal to attend Geneva was to protest against the failure of the international community in stopping the killing of Syrian people.

Syria Talks took place last week in Geneva with unfruitful outcome, the National Council, including the brotherhood, announced withdrawal from the Coalition a day before Jan 22, but the latest statement by MB comptroller refuted that, where analysts say most opposition groups are suffering a state of confusion and deep fraction in some terms.

A new talks round to start on February 10 with no great hopes, activists said

At the beginning of the Syrian revolution, the Brotherhood, under the auspices of al-Shaqfeh, refrained from participation, only issuing a statement on the protests at the end of April 2011. The statement called for the overthrow of the Syrian government. The Brotherhood later took part in the establishment of the Syrian National Council in Istanbul in October 2011, and was believed to be the most powerful group within the Council. The Brotherhood was represented by al-Shaqfeh and his deputy, Mohammad Farouk Tayfour.
