Syria strike toll rises to 52 pro-Assad fighters, mostly Iraqi

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The death toll in an overnight bombing raid on pro-regime forces in eastern Syria has risen to 52 loyalist fighters, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Monday.

"Among them are at least 30 Iraqi fighters and 16 Syrians, including 4 officers and 8 soldiers and members of loyalist militias," the monitor's chief Rami Abdel-Rahman told AFP, adding that the remaining six fighters were not immediately identifiable, according to AFP and Zaman al-Wasl sources.

Syrian state media blamed the strike on the U.S.-led coalition, which denied involvement.

More than 119,000 pro-regime forces have been killed, including 62,000 troops, tens of thousands of loyalist militiamen, and 1,556 fighters from Hezbollah, according to an estimate by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Alawites-dominated areas are still the main manpower supply for Bashar al-Assad's regime. The mourning posters and statements have been sweeping the streets and social media pages.

More than 470,000 people have been killed and 12 millions have been driven from their homes since Syria's revolution erupted in March 2011.
