Syria’s lifeblood: vehicle’s buffer zone

The high-security buffer zone across from Turkey's Reyhanli district on the Syrian side of the border crossing has become Syria’s lifeblood for aid.

The high-security buffer zone across from Turkey's Reyhanlı district on the Syrian side of the border crossing has become Syria’s lifeblood for aid. Vehicles carrying supplies from the Turkish side of the border are allowed to enter the buffer zone.

Vehicles that carry aid materials and commercial products from the Turkish side of the border are allowed to enter the buffer zone which is controlled with 24-hour security cameras and x-ray equipment.

The goods in vehicles depart from Cilvegozu and are transferred to trucks from Syria. Cement, fruit, vegetables and fertilizer materials from Turkey are brought to the buffer zone and transferred by porters to Syrian trucks that are controlled by the Turkish army.

Tahir Naif, a Syrian lorry driver, said "they were very satisfied with the transfer area in Turkey as it was very helpful for Syrian civilians."

“I would like to thank the Turkish government for this buffering area so we can deliver supplies from Turkey to Syria...and  Prime Minister Erdogan helps the Syrian people and God bless the Turkish people for their help,” Naif said.

Another Truck driver Mehmet Abu Yusuf emphasized that this buffer zone is the most important way for Syrian people to get essential goods.

More than 100,000 people have been killed during the three-year Syrian conflict, which has also internally displaced more than 6.5 million people. Over two million are now registered as refugees in neighboring Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq.
