Usud al-Sharqiya fighters to lay down arms, leave Tanf crossing

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Jaysh Usud al-Sharqiya, key rebel group operating at the Iraqi border, has agreed to lay down arms to the Jordanian army and to leave Tanaf border crossing with Iraq, sources told Zaman al-Wasl Friday.

The US-backed group will join the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces in Deir Ezzor province in eastern Syria.

Evacuating the Tanaf crossing is the second blow for rebels after withdrawing from the Nasib border crossing between Jordan and southern Syria last week.

The move enables Jordan and Iraq to revive the transit trade after almost seven years of blockage.

Sources said the moderate rebels are deeply upset with the US approach to Russia on their expense. The recent gains by the regime forces were due to a green light by Washington, rebels stressed.

Also in eastern Syria,  the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Friday that the death toll from an air strike overnight had climbed to 54, including Daesh (ISIS) militants and 28 civilians.

The air strike hit an area a few kilometers from the border with Iraq. Most of the civilians were Iraqi, Observatory Director Rami Abdel-Rahman said by phone.

He said the air strike had most likely been carried out either by the U.S.-led coalition against Daesh or Iraqi forces that are working with it.

Earlier reports by the Syrian state news agency SANA and the pro-Damascus al-Watan newspaper accused the U.S.-led coalition of carrying out the air strike.
