Idlib: strategic transit road reopens after Shiite villages evacuation

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian rebels have reopened the main road connects between northern Idlib city and the border crossing of Bab al-Hawa with Turkey after five-year-long closure caused by the siege of Shiite militants near the border.

 The road is one of the most strategic International roads in Syria. The reopening came two days after 6,000 people and pro-Iran fighters left the Shiite villages of al-Foua and Kefraya, making the 40-km road safe again for transit trade. 

Bab al-Hawa was a major international crossing before the Syrian war and handled billions of dollars of overland trade from Europe to the Gulf through Syria, according to Reuters.

Ammar al-Hamdo, Civil Defense worker in Idlib city, said efforts intensified form first hours of the evacuation of Shiite villages to reopen the road again.

Bulldozers and heavy machines were used to clear the road and lifting shields, earth mounds.  

More than two million people live in Idlib, which has become a refuge for many displaced Syrians from across the country, including rebel fighters and their families who left areas seized by the regime army.
