Israeli warplanes hit Iranian base in Hama province

Syrian state media and an independent monitoring group are reporting an Israeli air raid targeting regime-held areas in the center and west of the country.

Syria's SANA news agency says Israeli jets flying at high altitude above Lebanon fired several missiles on the area of Wadi Ayoun in Hama province, killing at least one person, and the town of Baniyas in the coastal Latakia province. The attack was launched on Tuesday around dusk.

It says the country's air defenses shot down five of the missiles.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported several explosions in the two areas. It says Israeli jets struck military installations belonging to Iran, a key ally of the Syrian regime.

Israel is believed to be behind a string of strikes targeting government and allied military installations. The Syrian regime accused Israel of striking a weapons research facility near Wadi Ayoun in July.

A well-informed source told Zaman al-Wasl that the Israeli missile attack on Mezzeh airbase on Sunday has demolished a five story building used by Air Force Intelligence and pro-regime militias.

The regime denies that Israel is responsible for Sunday's attack, saying loud blasts coming from Mezzeh were from an explosion at an ammunitions dump caused by an electrical problem, but an official in the regional alliance backing Damascus said they were from Israeli strikes.

At least two military personnel were killed and 11 wounded in the overnight explosions.

Iran's state news agency IRNA quoted an unnamed Iranian military official based in Syria as saying that the blast was caused by "an electrical short-circuit in an ammunition depot" on the outskirts of Damascus.
