(Zaman Al Wasl)- Thirst for Knowledge for Aphrodite Atef al-Zuhouri was not quenched by the great success she achieved as the “first” graduate of the English Language Department at the Lebanese University in Beirut.
She did not let the impressive and prolific work offers and opportunities that came her way reduce her insistence on finishing her graduate studies.
The young Syria refugee fled the city of al-Qusayr at the first of years of the Syrian revolution to settle in a camp in the Lebanese Bekaa Valley.
After her graduation from the Lebanese University in Beirut this summer, she was selected as one of the top three Syrian female graduates of the year by the Jusoor organization.
She was awarded a scholarship for masters’ degree at the University of Waterloo in Canada; a masters’ degree specializing in "Engineering and Computer Science". The scholarship grants full funding of the expenses and wages of residence and study.
Al-Zuhouri told Zaman Al Wasl: “My daughter was chosen on the basis of the impressive sequence of her scientific and voluntary achievements and her biography. In addition to being granted a scholarship in Canada, she was also nominated by the Lebanese university which noticed her excellence and uniqueness.”
Aphrodite worked, in addition to her scientific endeavors, as a volunteer for more than two years in teaching Syrian children, as a nonprofit worker of course. She volunteered for Wright-Bele, worked on investigating UNHCR refugee status and conditions, and participated in several "internships” of the Christian Jesuit Organization to educate refugee Syrians.
About her future goal in the university’s admission interview, Aphrodite answers: “ I love teaching Syrian Children anywhere they are in this world” her answer pleased the professor and interviewer who happily told her: “ you are well admitted as one of the students of our university”
