Aleppo: Leishmaniasis spread in two refugee camps

 (Zaman Al Wasl)- Leishmaniasis disease has spread in the displaced camps near Afrin city in northern Syria, medic told Zaman al-Wasl, reporting more than 100 cases. 

The ‘intracellular protozoan parasite’ spread in the camps of Deir al-Ballout and al-Mohamadiya in Aleppo countryside due to the bites of sandfly which multiple stongly in that region.

Leishmaniasis can present in three main ways: cutaneous, mucocutaneous, or visceral leishmaniasis. 

Abu Joma’a who works in the only medical point in the two camps said lack of medicines and medical supplies have deprived the infected people from treatment who need care for 20 days. 

Leishmania, locally known as Habbat Halab, or Aleppo Boil, appears in different parts of the body with face, hands and feet.

 Since the Syrian revolution erupted in 2011, more than 470,000 people have been killed, and more than 6 million people have been displaced.
