Brazilian delegation visits Syria, no comment on embassy move to Jerusalem

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Amid Barazil's attempt to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a Syrian parliamentary committee has met with Brazilian delegation without expressing any concern.

The Arab, Foreign and Expatriates Affairs Committee and the Syrian-Brazilian Friendship Committee have discussed the means to enhance parliamentary relations between the two countries to achieve the higher interests of both sides in all domains, the state-run news agency SANA reported on Sunday.

Boutros Murjaneh, head of the committee, has underlined the importance of joint cooperation between the parliament and the Brazilian Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.

For his part, head of the Brazilian delegation headed by Senator Fernando de Mello affirmed his country’s support to the dialogue with the aim of reaching a solution to the crisis in Syria.

Senator de Mello indicated that the Brazilian Embassy in Damascus continues its work despite of the war waged.

Activists said the regime officials that praised the Brazilian visit had not condemned a decision by Brazil's president-elect to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Jair Bolsonaro, a far-right politician, expressed strong support for Israel during his election campaign.

Jerusalem's status is one of the most contentious issues between Israel and the Palestinians.

Israel considers the whole of Jerusalem as its capital, while the Palestinians seek East Jerusalem as the capital of a hoped-for Palestinian state.

But Palestinian official Hanan Ashrawi told AFP news agency such "provocative and illegal steps... will only destabilise security and stability in the region".

Since the Syrian revolution erupted in 2011, more than 470,000 people have been killed, and more than 6 million people have been displaced.
