(Zaman Al Wasl)- U.S.-backed Syrian forces arrested senior Daesh (ISIS) commanders in eastern Deir Ezzor province, activists said Thursday.
The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic forces backed by the US Army have raided the villages of al-Buhaira and al-Tayyaneh near al-Hajin town. Three commanders were arrested, including the Security (Emir) official in al-Bsaira area.
The SDF said Daesh sleeper cells are still active in liberated areas. They claim that about 500 families have been receiving salaries from the ultra-hardline Sunni militant group.
On Tuesday, Iraq launched airstrikes on Daesh targets in Deir Ezzor, destroying two buildings housing 40 fighters and weapons, Reuters reported.
F-16 fighter jets destroyed a building where Daesh members were storing weapons, killing 10 of them. A second strike destroyed a building housing 30 Daesh State fighters, it said in a statement.
Daesh, which once occupied a third of Iraq's territory, has been largely defeated in the country but has continued to carry out ambushes, assassinations and bombings there and still poses a threat along its border with Syria.
Daesh has resorted to guerrilla tactics since it abandoned its goal of holding territory and creating a self-declared caliphate straddling Iraq and Syria.
