Landmine kills five children in Eastern Ghouta

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Five children have been killed in a landmine explosion in Eastern Ghouta suburbs near the capital, local activists said Tuesday.

The explosives are suspected to have been planted by regime forces in the village of al-Jarba during the war on the eastern enclave of Damascus.

Syria has been facing an unprecedented landmine crisis caused by departing insurgents and regime forces.

The explosives are killing and maiming hundreds of civilians, mostly children, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said last April.

Landmines are hard to spot as they are usually buried under earth or rubble, a problem that has existed for decades in neighbouring Iraq, .

The fall of Eastern Ghouta last April was achieved in a brutal fashion and had changed the course of the war.  More than 1,700 civilians were reportedly killed in the eight-week offensive.

The Eastern Ghouta was the scene of the first major protests in the capital against the rule of Bashar al-Assad.

Since the Syrian revolution erupted in 2011, more than 560,000 people have been killed, and more than 6 million people have been displaced.
