Aleppo: free medical care, treatment lessen suffering in al-Ghandoura town

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Al-Amal Hospital is currently providing free medical services to more than 9,000 women and children per month in northern Aleppo province, such a number highlights the remarkable role of charity hospitals in opposition-held areas as most of people suffer and aftermath of Syria’s devastating war.

Riyad al-Najjar, who manages the hospital, told Zaman al-Wasl that the work of Al-Amal hospital is not only to provide treatment for the children of the town al-Ghandoura in the eastern countryside of Aleppo, but also to benefit the displaced of Homs and Raqqa provinces. The estimated number of patients received by the hospital from al-Ghandoura and its neighboring areas is about 9,500 patients, in all specialties.

About 75,000 residents of al-Ghandoura were previously denied access to medical services in their area, where they had to travel either to the city of Jarablus that far of about 30 km (21 miles) or to the city of al-Bab, 50 km (35 miles), In order to obtain treatment services in their hospitals, according al-Najjar.

In April 2017, the Independent Medical Association (IDA) provided al-Amal Hospital with the necessary equipment to become an integrated medical service. All the services provided in the hospital are medicines, a lab and accommodation for patients and it’s fully free.

Free medical services helps parents to care for their children, especially that the hospital currently contains many specialties and sections such as: incubators, laboratory, pharmacy, intensive care, malnutrition, women's operation room, vaccinations, Thalassaemia, Ambulance, parturition, radiology as well as outpatient clinics including children, women  and a 24-hour ambulance.

The nursery section includes 9 incubators for children, two submarines, an open incubator and two child care
centers. Al-Najjar says this section is considered one of the most important sections in the Hospital, serving a large number of children where the newborns move to nursery department for the examination and care.

The nursing department has saved a lot of effort and time, which is threatening the lives of the transferred babies to another hospital. It has also saved the parents money that they may pay in private health centers, as well as the costs of moving to other hospitals.

The medical staff working in the health centers suffers from heavy pressure due to the large number of patients and the high incidence of diseases among children, especially in the winter, because of the lack of heating appliances and good nutrition. In addition to severe injuries and distortions and ruptures caused by war remnants and Mines ,and regard the absence of operating rooms for most of these centers, the injured are transferred to Turkey or to Turkish hospitals in northern Aleppo countryside.

Hatem al-Mousa, Pediatrician, told Zaman al-Wasl that the main difficulties facing the health centers in the eastern countryside of Aleppo are the difficulty and lack of transportation throughout the eastern region of Aleppo and the villages are very far apart, which is a burden for patients wishing to access these centers.
