Syrian refugees in Germany mourn 'Iconic' Sarout

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Hundreds of Syrian refugees held a memorial service for martyr Abdel-Basset al-Sarout in the German city of Dortmund who was killed on Saturday by the regime forces in northwestern Hama province.

The participants considered that Sarout’s spirit will not leave the revolution as long as it continues against the regime until it is overthrown and a free and democratic Syria is built.

Hala Rastanawi, one of the participants, said that Sarout, 27, had a great impact in the hearts of everyone who knew or heard his songs and participated in demonstrations or fought with him, adding, "We came today to emphasize the continuation of the Syrian revolution, as a respect for his spirit, and to introduce Europeans to our late Syrian revolutionary icon."

Rastanawi rejected some of the voices that over the last few days accused Sarout of sectarian tendencies, wondering, "How can a sectarian have all this love? How can he cheer shoulder to shoulder against the regime with the late Syrian Alawite artist Fadwa Sulaiman, how to pray on the body of the Christian Basil Shehadeh? ", saying that Sarout reflected the spirit of revolution and stressed that it is "a revolution for people of all sects."

Al-Sarout who survived at least three assassination attempts, had moved from being a famous goalkeeper to be a leader of the Syrian revolution in the central city of Homs.

Rastnawi said that the participants' message is clear: "Our hearts are with what is going on in Syria, our lives are always intersecting with the Syrian revolution, our eyes are moving to it every day. We must remind all countries, all peoples of our cause and we will not give up our rights and our youth. "

Ahmed Al-Mousalli, participant, explained that the loyalty to the spirit of ‘bulbul’ and guardian of the revolution comes from the amount of revolutionary love that he planted through his voice and his shouts for freedom. "How can we not weep for him, martyr son of a martyr, brother of martyrs who sacrificed their souls for the freedom of the people? Whose skulls became the cornerstones to rebuild Syria."

He considered the number of hundreds of participants reflects their commitment to the symbols of their revolution, stressing their determination to overthrow Assad’s regime as the sole condition for the end of the Syrian tragedy.

Al-Sarout was one of the most famous athletes in Homs city and its goalkeeper, before being discharged by Al-Karamah football club for being an advocate of the revolution in early 2011, as he participated in peaceful demonstrations in the city. In addition to his participation in the military operations targeting the regime forces during the years 2013 to 2019.

Syrian people kept in mind al-Sarout remarkable song when he kissed a murdered 19-year-old protester's bloody head whilst a crowd chanted to the beat of a drum "Sleep easy we will continue the struggle... mothers weep for Syria's youth".

The war, which started in 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-regime demonstrations, has killed more than 560,000 people and displaced millions.
