(Zaman Al Wasl)- A Russian Military Police patrol was rocked Saturday by an improvised explosive device (IED) in the southern province of Daraa, such an attack sparks fears of the revival of the armed opposition, activists said.
The IED was set off near the town of Busra al-Sham east of Daraa city.
Despite Russia-brokered reconciliation deals in the cradle of Syrian revolution, many attacks have been reported recently, targeting regime army and allied militias.
The Russian Military Police was deployed in Daraa due to the deal. No casualties reported in the IED attack.
Pro-regime media have blamed the sleeper cells of rebels or ISIS (Daesh).
Also a colonel in the Syrian regime army was killed by an IED in Busra al-Hariri town, activists said Saturday.
The unstable security condition in southern Daraa province has been leading to severe tensions due to the regime’s revenge policy, despite reconciliation deals.
Local activists say the frustration is mounting with regards to the regime’s security policies of arbitrary arrest and isolating the towns with military barriers.
Reports assured that Russia had reduced its military presence in Daraa and its countryside but the deteriorating economic conditions in the southern province may contribute to the return of tensions in the region.
Daraa people have been suffering suffer from difficulties of living and inflation, while the Jordanians took to the majority of the crops and agricultural products produced by the people of the district, according to the Italian agency, Aki.
The Russian intervention in Syria was officially announced on September 30, 2015, after an official request by the Assad regime for military aid against rebel groups.
The Russian heavy airstrikes helped the regime recapturing the historic city of Palmyra from ISIS in 2017, retaking the major city of Aleppo in December 2016, and breaking the three-year-long siege of Deir Ezzor.
Syria's war has killed more than 560,000 people and displaced millions since it started in 2011 with a brutal crackdown on anti-regime protests.
