Regime says Syrian population increased despite war

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The Syrian regime’s Central Bureau of Statistics estimated the number of Syrians living in Syria at more than 25 million by the end of 2018, an increase from about 21 million in 2011 at the start of the war.

The figures issued show that, contrary to the reports that the Syrian population had a decrease between 7 and 8 million, due to the fall of nearly one million Syrians in the war as well as the displacement of 7 million people, the number of Syrians has actually increased over the past eight years by about 4 million.

Eight years of war in Syria have killed 560,000 people and driven half the pre-war population of 22 million from their homes, including more than 6 million as refugees to neighbouring countries.

The distribution of the population based on sex was also surprising. According to the regime's statistics, males still outnumber females by more than 550,000, despite the war claiming a very high number of males, with another part fleeing the country. This lead to a very prominent presence of the female population in various fields, from schools and universities to institutions and companies.

The regime has released its census statistics as the international community continues developing a new constitution for Syria, which would be a prelude to the announcement of general elections, in which statistics will play an important role.
