(Zaman Al Wasl)- Two Russian soldiers were killed when unknown armed group opened fire on a Russian outpost in southern Daraa province, local opposition group said Monday.
Gathering of Ahrar Horan said the two Russian soldiers were killed late on Sunday by unknown gunmen at the Abu Khasha checkpoint, west of Nawa town.
The Russian military police deployed in Daraa two years ago due to a reconciliation deal in the cradle of Syrian revolution. But despite the Russian-brokered deal, many attacks have been reported, targeting regime army and allied militias.
Reports assured that Russia had reduced its military presence in Daraa and its countryside but the deteriorating economic conditions in the southern province may contribute to the return of tensions in the region.
Daraa people have been suffering suffer from difficulties of living and inflation, while the Jordanians took to the majority of the crops and agricultural products produced by the people of the district, according to the Italian agency, Aki.
The Russian intervention in Syria was officially announced on September 30, 2015, after an official request by the Assad regime for military aid against rebel groups.
The eight-year-old war has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands and forced 13 million people from their homes, half of whom have left their shattered homeland.
