Army arrests 2 for vandalizing banks

Two suspects that allegedly vandalized banks in December have been arrested, a statement from the Lebanese Army said Friday.

The Army’s statement said riots took place in Jounieh and in areas nearby, in December and earlier this month, some of which were documented in videos that were circulated on social media.

George Azzi and Mohamad Srour were among that the Army Intelligence was able to identify, the Army said.

According to the statement, Azzi and Srour were arrested after the Army found “weapons and ammunition" at their respective homes during a raid. The Army also confiscated a car that was used during the protests.

After questioning, they allegedly confessed to throwing Molotov cocktails, along with other people, at the offices of a Lebanese political party in Jounieh, on Dec. 5, 2019, which caused a fire.

Azzi and Srour also confessed, the statement said, that they sprayed red paint on the exteriors of three banks and ATM machines in Zouk Mosbeh and Jounieh on the night of Dec. 9.

Azzi confessed to breaking the main entrance of two Credit Libanais branches in Jounieh and Zouk Mosbeh on Jan. 5 with an iron hammer, as well as to burning an ATM machine with fuel.

He has been referred to the judiciary, while Srour is still being investigated by the judiciary, the statement said. The Army is working on arresting the "rest of the rioters."
