YPG car bomb kills 2 Turkish officers, 5 Syrian fighters: activists

(Zaman Al Wasl)- A blast killed two Turkish army officers and five fighters of the Syrian National Army in northeastern Suluk town, activists told Zaman al-Wasl Thursday.

Last October, The Turkish army backed by Syrian rebels took Suluk from the Kurdish People's Protection Units, or YPG, but since then several blast and IDE attacks have been reported.

Car bombs have become the new attack tactic by Kurdish militias to target pro-Turkey fighters, such a deadly tactic has claimed the lives of tens of people as blasts hit marketplaces and bus terminals in the towns of al-Bab, Jarablus, Suluk and Tal Abyad.

Suluk is located at a strategic crossroads about 10 km south of the Turkish border.

The Turkish army backed by the SNA has stepped up aerial and ground bombardment on Kurdish-led forces in northeastern Syria, following the killing of four Turkish soldiers.

The Turkish Defence Ministry said the soldiers were killed in a car bombing attack last week while they were conducting road checks.

The Turkish military death toll stands at 20 since October, when Turkey launched an offensive against Kurdish militants, according to AP.

Two SNA soldiers were killed along with the Turkish soldiers, activists told Zamam al-Wasl.

Turkey considers the Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units, or YPG, terrorists for their links to a decades-long Kurdish insurgency inside Turkey that has killed tens of thousands. The same fighters were the United States' partners on the ground in fighting the Islamic State group.

The Syrian National Army is an umbrella group in northern Syria consisting of an assortment of rebel forces. Many of the group’s factions, made up largely of Arab fighters, had already fought at Turkey’s behest in two previous military operations over the past three years.
