Change' Syrian play over love repercussions in wartime'

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian-Somali Theater director Khaled Abu Bakr is currently finishing the final rehearsals for his play, “Change” that will take place at the Parkvila Theater in Alphen Aan den Rijn, in western Netherlands, in early February.

The play addresses the war and anxiety about coming to Europe and revolves around a woman who had to flee Syria and leave her life behind, including her husband who mysteriously disappeared without a trace. It deals with her concerns after arriving in Europe and the difficulty to adapt.

The story is told through a memory the woman evokes of her husband’s reaction to their sterility and the doctor treating it, who tries to persuade them to resort to artificial insemination, which the husband rejects. Here a conflict ensues between the spouses in the highly theatrical language of the writer, Abdul Nabi al-Zaidi. The doctor’s character becomes involved in the conflict as he falls in love with her and decides to openly confront her with her husband’s death. The wife is seemingly a model of a woman who left Syria and who brought with her the concerns of war and the psychological distortions caused by it, making her unable, like many Syrians, to start a new life.

“Change” was produced in the Netherlands, by a Somali-Syrian director living in Luxembourg, an Iraqi writer, and Syrian actors. According to Abu Bakr, meeting these people helped with the creating diverse ideas about change for this production to come to life.
