Idlib: armed factions kill 40 Assad troops in 72 hours

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Pro-regime activists mourned more than 40 fighters loyal to Bashar al-Assad, including three General Brigadiers, said they were killed by rebels in the past 72 hours in northern Syria.

Assad troops have been advancing since December into the country's last rebel stronghold, which spans Idlib province and parts of nearby Aleppo.

Friday's clashes took place on the battlefronts of Saraqeb and al-Nayrab.

The Russian-led offensive led to a humanitarian crisis, with more than 600,000 civilians fleeing their homes since the beginning of December, according to the U.N. Many of them have sought safety in areas close to the border with Turkey. At least 53 health facilities have suspended work in the area, according to the World Health Organization.

The regime troops entered the strategic town of Saraqeb on Thursday, state-run media reported.

The town sits at the intersection of two major highways, one linking the capital Damascus to the north and another connecting the country’s west and east.

Rebels and jihadist groups have killed more than 135,000 pro-regime forces since the armed conflict erupted eight years ago with the brutal repression of protests against the Assad regime, according to local monitoring groups.

The conflict in Syria has killed more than 560,000 people and displaced 6.5 millions.
