Kurdish PYD to evacuate shelter hosts dozens of displaced

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Kurdish Democratic Union (PYD) has deprived dozens of displaced families from food rations after they refused to evacuate a shelter center to a refugee camp in Hasaka province, one of the dispalced told Zaman al-Wasl.

Abdullah al-Hassan, 42, said that, since his family’s displacement last October from Ras al-Ayn region, he has lived in one of the schools that the PYD has turned into a shelter in Hasaka. However, last week, Kurdish officials cut off their food rations when they refused to move to the camp they set up near Al-Tweinah town.

The PYD says that the camp administration was unable to set up enough tents due to the weather conditions in the area and heavy rains. The total number of the displaced reached 1021 families consisting of 6600 persons, curring living in 1021 tents, with 150 displaced families staying in the reception tents.

Hasaka hosts tens of thousands of displaced, mostly Kurds in 64 shelter centers, including schools, Al-Tweinah camp, or in the homes of their relatives or other rented houses that cost around 50 thousand SYP/ month for a small or newly built house without doors or windows.

About 90,000 people are staying in the camps of Al-Hol, Arisha, Al-Tweinah, and Tel Aswad in Hasaka in deplorable conditions.

Ankara's campaign in October, the so-called Operation Peace Spring,  drew widespread international criticism and the U.S. was seen as abandoning the Kurdish force that had helped fight ISIS (Daesh). Two ceasefires, brokered by the U.S. and Russia, required the Kurdish force to withdraw away from Ras al-Ayn region for Turkey to halt its offensive. Joint Russian and Turkish patrols were established.
