(Reuters)-At
least 20 regime soldiers died after Syrian rebels detonated a large
bomb in a tunnel under the old city of Aleppo on Saturday (May 31)
during fighting with government forces, according to the Syrian
Observatory for Human Rights, a human rights monitoring group with a
network of sources on the ground.
Video posted by a rebel group on social media showed a giant explosion in the old city, throwing debris high in the air.
Several rebel groups in postings on social media said up to 40
government soldiers perished in the explosion, but the monitoring group
reported only 20.
Reuters is unable to independently verify the content of this video, which has been obtained from a social media website.
On Friday (May 30), an attack on Aleppo's Bustan al-Qaser left locals in
disarray and video posted to a social media website showed many people
wounded and at least one dead body. Residential buildings were in ruins.
At least 162,000 people have been killed in Syria's three-year-old
conflict and thousands more are missing. Millions have been forced out
of their homes and have sought refuge in neighbouring countries.
