Lebanon: teenage Syrian inmate died of heart attack, relatives express doubts

(Zaman Al Wasl) - The Lebanese General Security said a 17-year-old Syrian refugee was died in prison due to a heart attack as activists voiced doubts about the death reason.

The body of Mohamed Ahmed Al-Dahham was handed over to his relatives for burial on Friday.

No torture signs appeared on Daham's body, according to his relatives, who said the teenage boy was so young to die of heart attack.

Daham was about to end his three years sentence by the end of 2020.

The Lebanese Access Center for Human Rights reported two weeks ago a high surge in violations against Syrian refugees since 2019, including arbitrary arrests, torture and enforced disappearances.

The Lebanese monitoring has directly contacted victims of torture in person and through telephone interviews, also by contacting their relatives.

The Center has documented 100 cases of arbitrary detention, one of which was by a political party, and the rest by local authorities.

According to official statistics, 945 thousand Syrian refugees are currently registered with the UNHCR in Lebanon. The Lebanese government estimates the true number to be 1.5 million.

Amnesty International had previously accused the Lebanese authorities of deliberately pressuring refugees to return to Syria, after being classified as the poorest refugees in the world, according to a study conducted by the HCR. The harsh policies and unbearable conditions in Lebanon have forced many to return despite the ongoing conflict.
