Refugee camps in Idlib suffer from fires

(Zaman Al Wasl)- About 350 displaced people have turned without a shelter as a blaze destroyed 60 makeshift tents in Sadaqa camp in northern Idlib province, head of the camp told Zaman al-Wasl Sunday.

Anwar Nasouh said at least 60 families need help after the fire took hold at the Sadaqa camp at the Turkish border.

At least two civilians were killed in seven fire outbreaks in the last three weeks in the tent camps at the Turkey-Syria border zone, according to a local official on Sunday.

Mohammad Hallaj, the director of Syria's Response Coordination Group, told Anadolu Agency that the gas cylinders cause the fires and close proximity of the tents lead its quick spread.

Civilians escaping Assad regime attacks take shelter in these refugee camps.

“The fire was extinguished by the asylum seekers’ efforts and with the support civil defense (White Helmets) in the region,” he said, adding that nobody was affected by the flares.

Idlib has long been under siege by bashar al-Assad forces and Iran proxies, and most of the previous cease-fires were plagued by violations.

About 268,000 displaced people have returned to their homes in northern Idlib province since a Russian-brokered ceasefire reached on March 6, Syria’s Response Coordination Group said Friday.

The local monitoring group has warned that constant ceasefire violations will endanger the lives of civilians and push for a new displacement wave in the region that hosts 3.5 million civilians, according to the United Nations.

The nine-year-old conflict has killed more than 400,000 people and displaced 7 millions.
