Four coronavirus cases recorded in northern Syria: Laboratory

Four new coronavirus cases have been recorded in the rebel-held north-west Syria, local health laboratory said Sunday, topping the infected cases to 35.

The  Epidemiological Surveillance Laboratory said four people of 34 who conducted Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were tested positive for the the COVID-19.

The positive cases recorded on Saturday were one in the Al-Bab region, and three in the border town of Al-Raei north-east Aleppo.

The first three cases affected last July were three doctors at a hospital near the Turkish border.

There are fears the virus will spread rapidly through these vulnerable populations, overwhelming an already ravaged healthcare system.

Dr. Maram Al-Sheikh, health minister in the opposition's interim government told Zaman al-Wasl that people who were in contact with the infected cases had been put under quarantine.

Nearly 780 people have now been confirmed with the coronavirus in Syria, and while at least 246 people have recovered from COVID-19 and 43 people have died, according to data from the World Meters organisation.

For months aid groups have issued stark warnings about the risks of a coronavirus outbreak in northwestern Syria.

Almost one million people have fled their homes in the area since last December due to Russian-led regime offensive, with many of them now living in overcrowded refugee camps with inadequate healthcare facilities and little clean water.

The nine-year-old war has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands and forced 13 million people from their homes, half of whom have left their shattered homeland.
