Russia eyes dominance on historic Palmyra city

Russian mass media reported that scientists of the Institute of physical Culture History of the Russian Academy of Sciences ended work with a three-dimensional model of the Syrian city of Palmyra, listed on UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites, claiming that this is “a prelude to the reconstruction of the historical site.”

The Sputnik agency said that the digital model has now been transferred to the Department of Antiquities and Museums in Syria for the possibility of restoring the city in the future using new technologies.

The agency added that a group of researchers from the institute has been working on “establishing an integrated three-dimensional digital system since 2016, after the terrorist attack and destruction of antiquities by ISIS terrorists.”

Furthermore, Sputnik confirmed that the Russian experts “were among the first in the world to announce the need to preserve the monument and preserve its data related to it for future generations, as a tremendous amount of work has been accomplished over several years,” noting that the total area of the survey reached 20 square meters, as it was done. Over 55,000 high-resolution aerial photos have been captured and model elements consist of approximately 700 million points.

Likewise, the “Russia Today” channel and the state-run news agency SANA quoted the director of antiquities and museums in Syria, Mahmoud Hammoud, as saying that "after the great destruction of Palmyra by ISIS,  Russians in the Association of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the State Hermitage Museum undertook a three-dimensional documentation project for the city, noting that “the project was implemented in two phases.”

Russia is seeking to control vital sites in Syria, starting from ports and airports, passing through factories and laboratories, and ending with state institutions and historical sites.
