Assad govt imposes penalties on trading subsidised staples

The Syrian government issued new decisions regarding subsidised food staples and commodities, after widespread anger among loyalists about the circulation of these material in the market through officials and powerful people in the regime.

The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Protection announced on Wednesday that whoever trades in subsidised materials would face heavy penalties, such as imprisonment for a year and paying a one-million SYP fine.

The ministry’s decision included “prohibiting the distribution of materials except to the concerned person exclusively”, stressing that they are to be delivered directly to the buyer or through an authorised stand-in.

The decision also prohibited any person, institution, private or online company, or website, from trading in subsidised materials.
