The first of its kind inside the deserted Rukban camp, a Syrian refugee woman underwent a successful Cesarean delivery, The director of the medical point said Monday.
Dr. Shukri Chihab said that the medical team of the Council of the Palmyra and Syrian Badia Tribes had performed the surgical operation on the woman who was experiencing sudden labor pains in her thirty-eighth week of pregnancy, which required urgent surgical intervention.
Chihab’s experience as a nurse allowed him to administer anesthesia, while midwife Atab al-Abdullah performed the surgery with the assistance of midwife Hasna al-Mutlaq. The patient was then moved to a vehicle equipped with an operation room and a resuscitation area.
Rukban camp is located in the demilitarized border area with Jordan, holding about 12,000 displaced people, most of them women and children, who refuse to leave despite the lack of the most basic necessities of life.
The team had undergone an anesthesia and surgery training course on Zoom under the supervision of specialized doctors, who followed up on the patient’s conditions of the patient and guided the team step-by-step during the surgical procedure.
Chihab said that the operation lasted about an hour and forty-five minutes, and was successful and without any complications during and after the operation, with both the mother and the newborn in good health.
Chihab expressed his appreciation towards the civil and military support in Rukban camp to ensure the success of the operation by providing logistical assistance and the means of communication with the team of doctors, as well as securing the vehicle equipped with the essential materials required for the procedure.
