The United Nations special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, on Wednesday assured that the country could be a powder keg for a major international incident, as five foreign armies are operating there.
In a report to the Security Council, the UN high representative pointed out that although there is a fragile calm now, it is still far from the ceasefire at a national level, decreed by the UN Resolution 2254.
The UN calls for an end to hostilities in Syria in order to protect civilians, keep peace and security, support a political process and concentrate forces to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, terrorist groups continue to operate in Syria with support from US and Turkish illegal occupation forces, as Damascus has denounced at the Security Council.
The need for a negotiated political solution of Syrian ownership, to promote the work of the Constitutional Committee and of greater international cooperation were other issues to which Pedersen referred on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Mark Lowcock, reported that the number of Covid-19 cases in Syria continues to increase although due to the scarce evidence it is not possible to accurately assess the extent of infections.
In northwestern Syria, where hostilities persist, the humanitarian situation is very tense and displacement is going up, he indicated.
Almost 10 years ago, the conflict broke out in Syria, largely as a result of the interest of the West and its regional allies in imposing a regime change and overthrowing President Bashar Al Assad.
