BEIRUT: At least 10 civilians were wounded Thursday after a homemade bomb was tossed under the al-Khanaq bridge in Lebanon's second largest city Tripoli, a security source told The Daily Star.
Earlier reports had suggested that Tripoli citizen, Issam al-Shaar was killed in the attack but a Lebanese Red Cross spokesman said he was in critical condition.
Heavy damage and blood was visible at the scene of the explosion. The wounded were transported to the nearby Al-Shifaa and Mazloum hospitals.
Reports said that it was highly likely that the crude explosive device targeted a Lebanese Army patrol. The source said an Army post is located approximately 30 meters away from the site of the explosion.
Hostile feelings against the Army run high among a segment of the Sunni community in the coastal city due to perceived double standards, which were exacerbated after the clashes in the border town of Arsal.
