COVID-19: local health body warns of second wave in Afrin

The Opposition's Health Directorate in northern Afrin city warned of a new wave of the COVID-19 infections amid pandemic spread in Turkish-held areas in northern Syria.

The directorate, in cooperation with the military police, imposed on Monday a complete quarantine on the village of Agila after 21 infections recorded in the region.

The directorate has also called on the people to take all preventive measures from wearing masks, washing hands and sterilizing them frequently, avoiding shaking hands and staying away from gatherings.

Also in Afrin, security forces seized 128,000 pills of the drug Captagon, according to a statement issued Monday.

The Anti-Drug and Smuggling said Tuesday that the drug pills were hidden inside Olive containers equipped for exportation to Saudi Arabia.

The seizure of the drug Captagon reveals the scale of illegal drug production in Syria as both the Syrian regime and Lebanese militia Hezbollah deny involvement in the drugs trade.

Turkey’s military backed by opposition forces seized Afrin, a mainly Kurdish district, from the YPG in March 2018 in a major offensive.

Afrin suffers from a state of insecurity and chaos of weapons proliferation, as the border city frequently witnesses assassinations and kidnappings to blackmail the kidnapped, in addition to car and motorcycle explosions.
