'North Syria will collapse' if humanitarian aid blocked: local relief group

The Syria Response Coordination Team said Thursday that halting the delivery of aid to northern Syria will cause the area to collapse completely in humanitarian and economic terms.
 
The authorization mechanism for the entry of humanitarian aid across the Bab al-Hawa border crossing into northern Syria, through UN Security Council Resolution No. 2533/2020, will expire on July 11.
 
According to Bloomberg, Turkey and the U.S. agreed to work together to ensure the uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian aid to northern Syria, after Russia signaled it could veto an extension of United Nations supplies sent across the Turkish border.
 
The deal was reached during a meeting between U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, and the Turkish president’s spokesman Ibrahim Kalin in Ankara on Wednesday.
 
The relief group warned that more than 1.8 million people will be deprived of food aid, and more than 2.3 million people will be deprived of access to clean and potable water, in addition to the interruption of bread subsidies in hundreds of camps and depriving more than a million people of access to food aid. Bread daily. 
 
Also, halting aid delivery will reduce the number of hospitals and effective medical points at the present time to less than half in the first phase and more than 80% will be closed in the second phase, and the support for the camps will drop to less than 25%, and the inability of humanitarian organizations to provide support to repair the damages within the camps, and an increase in COVID-19 infections have reached record levels, due to the deprivation of medical centers from providing their medical services, in addition to the cessation of support for hygiene projects, particularly within the camps.
 
The team said that several economic aspects will witness a collapse in the event of non-extension, most notably: the rise in unemployment rates and the search for work during the first phase by 40% and the second phase by 20%, and the increase in the prices of basic materials and commodities in varying rates, most notably foodstuffs by 300% and non-food items By 200%, as for bread, it will increase by 400%.
 
Also, the local commercial centers will not be able to secure the shortage of materials and goods, especially with the inability of civilians to secure their daily needs.
 
Idlib is home to 3.5 million refugees but is controlled by opposition Islamist fighters. Russia wants all assistance channeled through Damascus.
