Idlib: Ansar al-Tawhid faction unveils homemade missile

The Ansar al-Tawhid faction operating in northwestern Syria unveiled a homemade missile used last week in bombing Syrian and Russian forces' sites in southern Idlib province.

Abu Al-Farouq Ansar, media official in the Ansar al-Tawhid faction, told Zaman al-Wasl that the Zelzal missile, or the Earthquake, is a leap in missile manufacturing for Ansar al-Tawhid, stressing that the missile’s destructive power is surpassing the destructive power of warplane missiles.

The missile has proved very effective in hitting and destroying targets with high accuracy, according to Ansar.

The missile was used for the first time in an attack on a joint military operations room for regime forces and allied militias  in the southern region of Idlib. The position was destroyed, he added.

The main goal of manufacturing these types of missiles is to destroy large military targets, camps, gatherings and fortifications of Assad’s forces and the militias supporting them, said the spokesman.

In the past months, Ansar al-Tawhid has launched several attacks on regime bastions in the south of Idlib and western Hama province, leaving dozens of deaths and injuries.

The scattered attacks along with the recent regime escalation on Idlib region are flagrant violations of a 15-month-old ceasefire brokered by Turkey and Russia that may trigger new wave of displacement.

The regime shelling on the opposition-held Idlib enclave killed 12 people Thursday.

Idlib is home to 3.5 million refugees but is controlled by opposition Islamist fighters.

The Syrian conflict has claimed 494,438 lives and has displaced 13,2 million people since it erupted in March 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-regime protests.
