Russia stationed 4 warplanes in Qamishli ahead of Turkish military operation

Russia has transferred four warplanes from the Hmeimim Air Base in coastal Latakia province to the airport in the city of Qamishli, in the northeastern Hasakah province, ahead of Turkish military operation against the US-backed Kurdish forces..

Sources confirmed to Zaman al-Wasl that four Su-35 warplanes arrived yesterday and today at the airport in Qamishli city, which the Russian forces use as a military base.

This is the first time that Russian fighters have landed since the airport was used as a base for Russian forces since 2019, when it was used for cargo planes and helicopters only.

In addition, during the past few days, the Turkish forces sent huge military reinforcements to the Ras al-Ain area as part of the military change of existing forces, as more than 100 military vehicles arrived yesterday night, Wednesday, in the Tal Abyad region north of Raqqa.

The sources indicated that the reinforcements included field guns, tanks, armored vehicles, logistical equipment, and tankers loaded with fuel, in addition to more than 300 commando forces.

The Turkish army’s reinforcements came in conjunction with official Turkish statements, indicating Ankara’s intention to launch a military operation against the Syrian Democratic Forces led by the People’s Protection Units (YPG).

The Turkish military and the Syrian National Army attacked Kurdish forces in northeastern Syria on October 9, 2019 with the aim of creating a roughly 30-kilometer (20-mile) deep buffer zone.

Ankara views the YPG as a terrorist group linked to Kurdish militants on its own soil and has mounted military operations in northern Syria to push it back from the border.
