3 civilians killed, 16 injured in YPG attack in Afrin

At least three civilians were killed and 16 others injured after militants of the powerful Kurdish YPG militia fired multiple rockets in northern city of Afrin on Friday.

Six rockets struck Afrin at around 6 p.m. (3 p.m. GMT), according to a statement by the governor's office of Turkey's southern Hatay province that borders Syria.

The Hatay Governor's Office has launched an investigation along with Syrian authorities, the statement said.

Afrin, like all Syrian areas held by pro-Turkish rebels, is the scene of regular targeted killings, bombings and shootings that largely remain unclaimed.

Over the past two months, Afrin was hit by six separate attacks using explosive devices, including one targeting the vehicle of a rebel commander.

On October 10, a car bombing in Afrin killed six people, including at least one Turkey-backed rebel fighter.

Turkey and its Syrian proxies have seized territory inside Syria in several military operations since 2016 against the Islamic State (IS) group and the Kurdish YPG militia.

In March 2018, they seized the town of Afrin after pushing out Syrian Kurdish forces.

The conflict in Syria has killed nearly 500,000 people since it started in 2011 with the brutal repression of peaceful demonstrations. (Zaman, Agencies)
