Former schoolgirl IS recruit hopes for UK return to face trial

A London schoolgirl who left the capital in 2015 to join Islamic State militants in Syria said Sunday she wants to face trial back in the UK.

Now incarcerated in a prison camp in northeastern Syria, Shamima Begum asked for representatives of the British government to interrogate her, in an attempt to assure the public that she is not a threat to national security.

That is unlikely to happen anytime soon, though - former home secretary Sajid Javid stripped her of her citizenship shortly after she was found in a Syrian refugee camp.

Begum was speaking in an interview with British broadcaster Sky News.

As a 15-year-old, Begum travelled to Raqqa, the de facto capital of the IS 'caliphate', where she married a Dutch fighter.

They had three children together, all of whom have since died.

When initially recruited - both online and by friends - Begum said she was promised "paradise."

Three years of life under IS rule proved very different in reality.

"It was actually hell," she said. "Hell on earth."
