Syria's Response Team says Covid-19 still high risk in density camps

Syria's Response Coordinators group counted Covid-19 infections in the opposition areas in northern Syria in February, saying that the Afrin region was at high risk by 880 positive tests.

The rescue team indicated that the high-risk areas are Idlib province 839 cases and the Harem 727 cases, al-Bab area 566 cases, Azaz border city 496 cases, and Jabal Samaan 203 cases.

The areas of medium risk are Jarablus areas 179 cases, Jericho 172 cases, and Jisr al-Shughour 54 cases.

The team stressed the need to vaccinate the residents and displaced people, for fear of a further spread of the pandemic in March.

The Early Warning and Initial Response Network confirmed on Tuesday that 515 new positive cases had been recorded out of the 996 tests conducted within the opposition areas, bringing the number of positive cases since the beginning of the outbreak to 97,221 as 2388 people of died of Covid-19 since its outbreak

The response group considered that the outbreak of the Covid-19 represents a new episode that may be the most dangerous in the chain of difficult conditions that the civilian population has been experiencing for years.

The high density camps, along with the lack of cleanliness and inadequate sanitary conditions, pose a major threat to the safety and health of IDPs, according to the team.

The coordinators team appealed to humanitarian and international organizations to afford basic supplies to combat Coronavirus as well to increase humanitarian operations.

Northwestern Syria is home to 3.5 million refugees but is controlled by opposition Islamist fighters.

The Syrian conflict has claimed 540,000 lives and has displaced 13,2 million people since it erupted in March 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-regime protests.
