Germany: Three Syrians drowned in Rhine River

Three Syrian young men were drowned in the Rhine river when car capsized in western Germany last Monday evening, according to the augsburger-allgemeine news site.

Activists reported that five Syrian youths, whose names were not known, were riding in a car near the town of Wesel when their car suddenly veered to the edge of the river and fell into it.

In the details published by the German augsburger-allgemeine website, the car fell over the quay wall in the harbor basin around 7 a.m on Monday evening.

The civil defense divers were able to find the wreckage of the sunken car one day after the accident, while the search for the bodies of the victims took many hours.

The car was lifted from a depth of 6 meters from the river and the bodies of the victims were found in the back seat of the car because they were unable to get out because of the water pressure and freezing temperatures.

A spokesperson for the Wesel region police said that the cause of the accident is still not clear, adding that the Traffic Directorate and the accident expert who was called has begun an investigation into the accident, while the circumstances surrounding the accident are still the subject of intensive investigations by the police and the Prosecutor's Office in Duisburg.

A man, his wife and their child drowned last week as a result of a tragic traffic accident that caused their car to fall into the river in a border area between Germany and Austria a few days ago.

Germany is one of the countries hosting the most international migrants and between 2015 and 2019 alone more than 1,622,954 people registered as asylum seekers with Syrians being the largest single nationality.

The Syrian conflict has claimed 540,000 lives and has displaced 13,2 million people since it erupted in March 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-regime protests.
