The Jordanian Customs said on Tuesday they had seized more than about 1.4 million Captagon pills smuggled by a Syrian truck.
The Customs Department said in a statement that a suspicious truck loaded with home furniture was subjected to an x-ray machine. During a close inspection, the illegal amphetamine pills were found secretly hidden in an elaborate technical way inside the truck coming from a neighboring country, which was specially prepared for this purpose.
Jordanian media quoted Jaber Customs Director, Customs Colonel Mohamad Al-Nsour, as saying that the seizures of Captagon pills are estimated at 1,428,000, weighing 238 kg.
Captagon was one of the brand names for the amphetamine-type stimulant fenethylline and is now manufactured illegally, mostly in Lebanon and Syria.
The pill is consumed by a wide variety of users, mostly in Gulf countries.
According to a European Union-funded report by the Center for Operational Analysis and Research, “Captagon exports from Syria reached a market value of at least $3.46 billion” in 2020.
Seizures have continued to rise and, according to an AFP count, close to 50 million pills have been seized across the region since the start of the year.
