Palestinian elites, activists in Syria endured to arrest and torture: AGPS

The Syrian regime forces launched since March 2011 arrest campaigns against thousands of Palestinian refugees in Syria, stressing that they focused primarily on targeting elite doctors, media professionals, political activists and opinion leaders who had a prominent and influential presence in the Palestinian community and camps in Syria,  Palestinian rights monitoring said.

The Action Group for Palestinians of Syria said that the number of Palestinian detainees documented from 2011 until 2022 reached nearly two thousand, including men, women, children and the elderly, including prominent Palestinian figures who are still under arrest or whose has been killed of  torture in Syrian prisons.

The monitoring group attributed the reasons for the arrest to the regime’s collective punishment policy against the residents of the camps that got out of its control, or because of the political position of the regime or participation in the Syrian opposition, or because of slander and malicious reports of collaborators with the Syrian intelligence.

AGPS added that hundreds of Palestinian detainees have been killed under torture in the prisons of the Syrian regime since 2011.

The Working Group was able to document the killing of 636 Palestinian refugees in Syrian prisons, while the group estimates that the number of victims of torture far exceeds this number due to the difficulty of documentation, as the regime is silent about the fate of the detainees. and the conditions and places of their detention, while the families of the victims are afraid to inform the human rights organizations active in the field of documenting violations for fear of prosecution by the Syrian intelligence services.

AGPS stressed the presence of hundreds of other Palestinian activists, opinion leaders, dignitaries and influencers who were systematically targeted in Syria by the Syrian regime.
