Syrian Trade raises food prices on 'subsidy' card

The regime's Syrian Trade Corporation raised the prices of food items listed on the smart (subsidy) card, which were distributed only once on the card during the year 2023.

Under the new pricing, the price of a liter of vegetable oil became 22,500 pounds, a kilo of sugar became 14,000 pounds, while the price of a kilo of rice reached 14,000 pounds, a kilo of bulgur became 7,500 liras, a kilo of lentils became 18,000, and a single ton can was 14,000 pounds.

It is noteworthy that the price of a liter of vegetable oil was 21,500 pounds, a kilo of sugar was 12,000 pounds, a kilo of bulgur was 6,500 pounds, a kilo of lentils was 16,000 pounds, and a can of tons was 12,000 pounds.

The Director General of the Syrian Trade Corporation, Ziyad Hazza, justified the reason for the rise in the prices of some foodstuffs, saying that it is due to the existence of new contracts, and thus the prices and costs change depending on the change in the party providing the material, which requires a slight change in the prices of some materials based on the new contract signed.

Hazza claimed to the pro-regime Athar Press website that the increase in prices is a small percentage compared to the markets, and is only to prevent losses since the institution is an economic sector, pointing out that this measure comes within the framework of providing materials at prices lower than the market, and with the aim of positive intervention.
