Syrian factions press more gains, reach Badia desert

The Syrian opposition factions, through two simultaneous military operations, were able to control the Military Engineering Academy, the Artillery College, and one of the neighborhoods of Aleppo city, in addition to controlling the cities of Al-Safira and Khanaser in the southeastern countryside of Aleppo on the outskirts of the Syrian desert.

The "Deterrence of Aggression" operations room announced this morning, Sunday, that its forces were able to control the Military Academy and the Artillery College in Al-Ramouseh on the western edge of Aleppo city, and the industrial area in the Sheikh Najjar neighborhood in the center of Aleppo city, northern Syria, after defeating the regime forces and the Syrian Democratic Forces "SDF" from them.

The HTS-led forces took control of the town of Khanaser in the southern countryside of Aleppo, after expelling the regime forces from it, and seizing heavy weapons that the regime forces left behind and withdrew deep into the Syrian desert, with the capture of 12 members.

In the context, the factions of the Fajr al-Hurriya Operation (Freedom’s Dawn) operations room announced that their forces had taken control of the city of al-Safira in the southern eastern countryside of Aleppo, which is a short distance from the defense factories (the most prominent strongholds of the Iranian militias in Syria, and the thermal power plant east of Aleppo Governorate), confirming the capture of 6 tanks, a Gvozdika cannon, and a Pantsir air defense system.

Military sources told Zaman al-Wasl that the regime forces were able at dawn today, Sunday, to regain control of the towns of "Taybat al-Imam", "Maardis", and "Halfaia" in the northern countryside of Hama, and Mount "Zain al-Abidin" at the entrance to the city of Hama from the north.

Meanwhile, the Syrian opposition factions are still deployed in the cities of Morek, al-Lataminah, Kafr Zita, and Kafr Nabudah in the northwestern countryside of Hama, with violent battles being fought on the outskirts of the al-Ghab Plain area from the northern side in the northwestern countryside of Hama.

Meanwhile, Russian and Syrian jets struck the opposition-held city of Idlib on Sunday in the second day of intensive bombing in northern Syria aimed at pushing back fighters who had swept through to the city of Aleppo, Syrian army sources said.

Residents said one of the raids hit a crowded residential area in the center of Idlib, which is the largest city in a opposition enclave near the Turkish border where around four million people live in makeshift tents and dwellings.

At least four people were killed and dozens injured, according to rescuers at the scene.

The Syrian army and its ally Russia say they target the hideouts of opposition groups and deny attacking civilians.

Over the past 72 hours, opposition forces swept into the city of Aleppo, east of Idlib province, on Friday night, forcing the army to redeploy in the biggest challenge to the regime head Bashar al-Assad in years.

The opposition forces are a coalition of Turkey-backed mainstream secular armed groups along with Hyat Tahrir al Sham, a group that is the opposition’s most formidable military force.

The war, which has killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced many millions, has ground on since 2011 with no formal end. But most major fighting halted years ago after Iran and Russia helped al-Assad’s government win control of most land and all major cities.
