Iran foreign minister: Astana process likely to meet in Doha to discuss Syria

The foreign ministers of Iran, Turkey and Russia are likely to meet in the framework of the Astana process on Dec. 7 and 8 to discuss Syria on the sidelines of the Doha Forum, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Monday, according to state media.

During a visit to Ankara, Araqchi emphasized the importance of preserving the achievements of the Astana process, which has brought Turkey, Russia, and Iran together as key stakeholders in resolving the Syrian conflict. “We will try to activate this process again,” he said, reiterating the commitment to addressing the conflict through dialogue.

Araqchi also pledged to convene another round of ministerial talks in the Kazakh capital in the near future, noting that the last such meeting took place in mid-November.

Addressing the broader challenges facing Syria, Araqchi warned against the country becoming a hub for terrorist groups. His comments follow last week’s attack by opposition factions, which underscored ongoing instability in the region.

The Astana process, launched in 2017, aims to facilitate dialogue between the Syrian government and opposition groups, with a focus on de-escalation and humanitarian relief efforts. This upcoming meeting will be a critical test of the trio’s ability to navigate renewed tensions and chart a path toward peace.
