Kurdish Administration raises Syrian revolution flag over its institutions

The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria announced that it will raise the flag of the Syrian revolution (the flag of independence) on all its institutions in the areas under its control in the northeastern part of the country, five days after the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime.

The AANES said in a statement that the new flag symbolizes the new phase and expresses the aspirations of the Syrian people towards freedom, dignity and national unity after the end of "the era of oppression and tyranny imposed by the Syrian regime on the people for more than half a century."

The YPG-led administration added that the areas under its control represent an integral part of Syrian geography, and that the residents of these areas are authentic Syrian components.

The decision of the Autonomous Administration comes after the commander of the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces, Mazloum Abdi, confirmed last Sunday that "change is an opportunity to build a new Syria based on democracy and justice that guarantees the rights of all Syrians."

AANES forces, whose backbone is the People's Protection Units and which receive American support, evacuated the areas of Tal Rifaat and Manbij in Aleppo Governorate following the attack by the opposition factions.

The forces of the Military Operations Administration also took control of the city of Deir ez-Zor following the withdrawal of the Syrian Democratic Forces.

The Syrian independence flag was adopted by demonstrators and protesters in Syria as the flag of the revolution since its outbreak in 2011. The green symbolizes Islamic Caliphate, while the white symbolizes the Umayyad Caliphate and the black symbolizes the Abbasid Caliphate. The three red stars represent the cities of Damascus (southwest), Aleppo (northwest) and Deir ez-Zor (east).
