Syria Response Coordinators warns of war remnants

The Syrian Response Coordinators Team confirmed that many Syrian regions are witnessing explosions of war remnants and mines, specifically in areas previously controlled by the Assad regime, causing many civilian casualties and injuries.

The team stressed in a report that the widespread spread of war remnants in various areas of Syria, after the fall of the Syrian regime, poses a major threat to the lives and security of civilians. These remnants include landmines, unexploded explosive devices, and ammunition depots that were left without proper treatment.

The team's current estimates indicate that there are hundreds of thousands of war remnants and landmines spread across various Syrian regions.

Since the fall of the former Syrian regime, the team has recorded more than 22 incidents of war remnants explosions, resulting in the deaths of 20 civilians, including 3 women and 4 children, in addition to 18 civilians, including women and children, many of whom suffered permanent disabilities.

The teams specialized in removing war remnants were able to destroy about 592 pieces of war remnants, which represents a very small portion of the widespread remnants.

The team called on the relevant authorities to enhance the capacities of local and international teams specialized in removing remnants of war, including training and technical and logistical support.

The response team called for developing integrated plans to ensure that civilians do not return to affected villages and towns before the complete completion of the removal of remnants of war, in order to prevent further civilian casualties and injuries.

It also called on the relevant international parties, including the United Nations and non-governmental organizations working in the field of mine clearance, to send specialized missions to support the Syrians in accelerating these operations and reducing the time required to remove the remnants.

The response coordinators added that the delay in removing remnants of war will continue to endanger the lives of millions of Syrians, and will hinder the return of residents to their areas and the reconstruction of their communities. We believe that joint cooperation between local and international parties is capable of reducing losses and effectively ending this threat.

It appealed to the international community and humanitarian organizations to provide the necessary support to help the Syrians overcome this crisis, and ensure a safe and stable future for all civilians.
